Your Digestive Recovery Plan After Appendectomy

After appendectomy (appendix removal surgery), the digestive system needs time to recover, especially if you received general anesthesia or antibiotics. ​Post-Appendectomy Dietary Plan ​Phase 1: Clear Liquids (First 24 hours or until approved) ​Water, clear broths, apple juice, electrolyte drinks, herbal tea, plain gelatin. ​Goal: Keep hydrated without putting strain on the gastrointestinal tract. ​Phase 2: Soft & Bland Foods (Days 2–5) ​Carbohydrates: White rice, plain oatmeal, white toast, crackers, applesauce, bananas, plain pasta. ​Proteins: Scrambled eggs, plain Greek yogurt, boiled chicken, silken tofu. ​Vegetables: Well-cooked, steamed carrots or mashed potatoes (avoid skins). ​Tip: Eat 5 to 6 small meals throughout the day rather than 3 large ones to ease digestion. ​Phase 3: Gradual Return to Normal Diet (Week 2 onwards) ​Slowly reintroduce lean meats, whole grains, cooked vegetables, and light healthy fats as tolerated. ​Foods to Avoid During Early Recovery ​High-fat, fri...
